After a pandemic-era dip, domestic violence crime counts are climbing.
Denver is on track to count the most domestic violence crimes that it has in the 2020’s. Nine months into the year and already the city has reported more domestic violence crimes than in 2020, 2021, or 2022, and soon it will eclipse 2023’s total. Through September 2024, Denver is averaging 180 domestic violence crimes a month — in 2023, the city averaged 160 a month, and in 2022 the city averaged 167.
Rates in recent months have pushed the average up: The 215 domestic violence crimes reported in June 2024 were the most in any month in the past four years, and since then the monthly count has stayed close to 200.
In the last 48 months,
the average number of crimes in a month was 138.5 and the median was 132.5.
The most in any month was 215, in June 2024.
Domestic violence crimes include serious assaults, assaults, harrassment and stalking. By the City of Denver’s definition, only serious assaults are tallied in its violent crime counts. Serious assault domestic violence in 2024 accounted for about one in every three of all domestic violence crimes reported, that ratio holds roughly true for the years leading up.
On a neighborhood by neighborhood basis, Denver’s domestic violence crimes play out differently. Denver International Airport and Civic Center have had the highest rates so far this year and over the same time period last year, but beyond that there is an assortment of other neighborhoods in among those with the highest domestic violence rates.
